Great Smoky Mountains National Park News Park Announces Upcoming Roadwork on the Gatlinburg Bypass .

Great Smoky Mountains National Park News Park Announces Upcoming Roadwork on the Gatlinburg Bypass Great Smoky Mountains National Park officials announced upcoming roadwork plans on the Gatlinburg Bypass involving overnight closures and single lane daytime closures beginning in mid-August. Charles Blalock and Sons was awarded the contract to mill and resurface the Gatlinburg Bypass roadway and parking areas beginning August 19, 2013 through September 27, 2013. The Bypass will be closed to all traffic nightly from 8:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. Sunday night through Friday morning. Motorists should also expect daytime single lane closures Monday through Thursday. No work will occur during October, weekends, or holiday periods. From November 2013 through May 2014, motorists should expect daytime single lane closures while crews complete additional improvements along the bypass including reconditioning roadway shoulders and the replacement of damaged guardrails and bridge expansion joints. The Gatlinburg Bypass is a well-traveled road which received an interim surface treatment in 2011 that temporarily extended the life of the pavement surface. The upcoming full resurfacing treatment is expected to last 15-20 years. "The Gatlinburg Bypass offers a unique experience for Park visitors who enjoy the scenic views of Mt. LeConte from overlooks and it also serves a need for our neighboring communities by relieving heavy traffic," said Superintendent Dale Ditmanson. "We realize this work will cause traffic delays and we make every effort to minimize these impacts to our visitors and park neighbors by restricting closures during our busiest times." Park officials also remind motorists about the ongoing rehabilitation work Newfound Gap Road. Beginning on August 15, motorists should expect daytime single lane closures through Spring 2014 on 6.1 miles of the roadway from Chimney's Picnic Area south towards Newfound Gap. No work of any kind will be permitted on federal holidays or during the month of October. Park officials expect the next and final phase of this multi-year project from Chimney's Picnic Area to the park boundary at Gatlinburg to begin in November 2014 and be completed by November 2016. For more information about road closures, please visit the Park's website or call the Park's Road and Weather Information Line at 865-436-1200.

Minimum Height Requirement: 50 inches
Maximum Height Restriction: 78 inches (6 feet, 6 inches)

PIGEON FORGE, Tenn.—To accompany the historic opening of Wild Eagle, the country’s first steel wing coaster in March 2012, Dollywood theme park commissioned the country’s largest flying eagle steel sculpture which features a horizontal wing span equivalent to a four-story building.

Created by Canadian metal sculptor Kevin Stone, the one-of-a-kind three-dimensional sculpture weighs more than two tons and is made primarily of stainless and mild steel.  It includes the individual creation and welding of thousands of intricate feathers.

“When we initially conceptualized the art piece, we wanted it stand as a sentinel to beckon would-be riders to Wild Eagle but also celebrate our Smoky Mountains heritage,” Dollywood’s Director of Construction and Development Brian Dudash said.  “The sculpture is rugged and natural and certainly compliments its environment and the surrounding architecture.”

Stone worked for six months creating the sculpture in Metal Animation Studio in Chilliwack, British Columbia. Once ready for installation at Dollywood, the $250,000 sculpture will travel five days in a semi to its new home.  Stone will travel to Tennessee to oversee the sculpture’s installation in mid-February.

The eagle’s head hovers more than two stories above the entrance to Dollywood’s Wild Eagle coaster in the park’s Wilderness Pass area.  The eagle sculpture is symbolically posed with outstretched talons, ready to swoop down, and its keen eyes focused precisely on its prey.  From tip to tip, its wingspan measures 48 feet.

Harvest in the Smokies

Music and craft shows and the natural beauty of the mountains it is a must see for everyone! There are three large craft shows One at the Gatlinburg Convention Center -October 6th thru 23rd. It is one of the largest craft shows in the area. There is also the Rotary Craft show in Pigeon Forge at the Old Mill Area and Patriot Park. And of course the Harvest Festival at Dollywood which also features free concerts in addition to their regular shows.

Harvest isnt the only starting at this time of year. On my way to work this morning I saw the City workers starting to put of lights for Winterfest. They have 8 weeks to put up the millions of lights for Winterfest. What an amazing thing!
